The Georgia Municipal Cemetery Association, headed and founded by Stan Rogers, the city of Romes cemetery director, was recently honored with a commendation from Gov. Sonny Perdue.
Cave Springs Harold Smith is also a member of the association.
After the presentations the group was invited to survey the extensive storm damage at Oakland Cemetery guided by Atlanta Cemetery Director Sam Reed and Kevin Kuharic of the Oakland Historic Foundation. An effort is being organized among the membership to volunteer their assistance in restoring Oakland Cemetery.
Combining efforts to work on restoration projects such as this is one of the many benefits of membership afforded by this organization, said Rogers, president of the GMCA. Cemetery personnel and GMCA members from different areas of the state can share their experience and expertise with the many issues that arise in complicated and massive restoration projects such as this.
The GMCA, founded by Rogers, was created at its first organizational meeting in Macon on October 9, 2007.
