Spc. William E. Allmon
A soldier who was born in Floyd County and lived in the area until he was a teenager, was killed in combat over the weekend, Department of Defense officials and his widow said today.

Spc. William E. Allmon, 25, of Ardmore, Okla., died April 12 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, and 3rd Infantry Division, of Fort Stewart.

The Department of Defense made the announcement today about the death of Allmon, who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Allmon, who served as a combat engineer in the Army, specialized in building protective structures for friendly forces and destroying protective structures for enemy forces.

This was his second deployment to Iraq — his first was between January 2005 and January 2006.

Kevin Larson, a spokesperson with Fort Stewart, said during Allmon’s career in the U.S. military, he received a number of recognitions, which include two army commendation medals, an army achievement medal and a combat action badge.

Allmon is survived by his wife, Jennifer Allmon, their 3-year-old son Damien, and their stepson, Jason Luke Johnson, 11, all of Chattooga County; his father, William Allmon of Cartersville; mother, Donna Fortune of Guyton; grandfather, Leonard Allmon of Lindale; and grandparents, Billy and Joann Phillips of Cedartown.

Arrangements for Allmon’s funeral have not been made.
