On April 12th the 2008 Atlanta Steeplechase will welcome Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue to Kingston Downs for the 43rd running of its charity event, according to Steeplechase organizers. The Governor's office has confirmed that Governor Perdue will participate in the opening ceremonies at noon. He will be introduced to race fans by Atlanta Steeplechase Board of Stewards Chairman, Mr. Hal Barry.
The Governor will deliver the blessing and present a proclamation designating April 12, 2008 Steeplechase Day in Georgia. He will also present the trophy to the winning owner, trainer and rider in the feature race, the Georgia Cup. Governor Perdue earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1971 from the University of Georgia, one of the Steeplechases title beneficiaries.

He has been a businessman, community leader, Sunday school teacher, State Senator, Majority Leader and President Pro Tempore of the Georgia State Senate, as well as an officer in the United States Air Force. Barry is a dynamic and multifaceted commercial real estate firm specializing in developing, marketing, and management - with a primary emphasis on the southeast. The company has been responsible for the development and renovation of over 4 million RSF of office space to date.

They have been recognized by numerous industry awards for their ability to create superior asset value. He is an avid fox hunter, Thoroughbred race horse owner and breeder of champion fox hounds. He and his wife Linda reside at Bear Creek Farm in Moreland Georgia.
