An inmate being held in the Floyd County Jail was listed in intensive care this afternoon at Floyd Medical Center after an early morning fight with another inmate, jail officials said.
Larry Stokes, 38, who was beind held for Gordon County, was taken to the hospital after somehow bumping his head during a fight with Floyd County inmate Emmanuel Smith, according to Deputy Chief Tom Caldwell with the sheriffs office.
Caldwell said the fight broke out sometime after 7 a.m. in cellblock L.
Paramedics "did CPR on him because they couldnt get a pulse, but after they got him back and had a pulse, they took him to Floyd Medical Center, Caldwell said. Hes in pretty bad shape right now, but his family has been notified and theyre with him right now.
Smith was uninjured and separated from the other inmates.
Once we saw it was that bad and we got (Stokes) to the hospital, we locked down the other inmate and roped off the room and waited on GBI to get there, Caldwell said.
Joe Montgomery with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been at the jail all day today, interviewing staff mem-bers, witnesses and inmates, trying to determine exactly what happened this morning, Caldwell said.
Caldwell is not sure who initiated the fight, but Montgom-ery will be back at the jail again Wednesday investigating the incident.
Stokes, who was convicted of two counts of trafficking methamphetamine and sentenced to 15 years in the state prison, was brought to Floyd County Feb. 14.
Smith, a Rome resident, was convicted of burglary, pos-sessing tools for the commission of a felony, and sentenced to five years.
Both men were waiting to be transferred to a state prison, Caldwell said.
