A new project will hopefully provide a large tree house at Ridge Ferry Park, designed to be accessible to those with disabilities.

At the Seven Hills Rotary Club meeting today, David Smith of Rome showed a presentation about the project, called “A Tree House For Rome.”

The tree house will be near the soon-to-be-constructed Eco River Center, which will be in the old pump house at the park. The tree house will not only serve as a scenic way to enjoy the park’s landscape, it will house some environmental exhibits and be part of the entire learning center campus.

“If you know someone who is in a wheelchair, this is probably an experience they’d never have otherwise,” Smith said.

He said the project should cost around $25,000, and that more than $18,000 has been pledged or donated already.

The tree house, tentatively slated to be about 600 square feet, should be a big draw for the upcoming river center.

“It should be a very visible project, and I think it will be a great draw to the park,” Smith said.
