Rome-based Wheeler’s Building Materials is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Mark Manis, chief executive officer, said this morning. The first filing was made late Monday afternoon and a series of other filings are being prepared this morning in bankruptcy court.
“We will figure something out. We always have,” Manis said. “It’s a sad day, but these are sad times for the whole building industry.”
At the end of last month Wheeler’s announced it would lay off 264 employees in Rome and Cartersville. Wheeler’s has been cutting operations severely since early 2007. It has closed two plants in Charlotte and plants in Dalton, Calhoun, Newnan, Morrow, Madison and Cartersville. Wheeler’s also sold a plant in Birmingham.
