College Roundup: Shorter track teams have solid weekend

Having already earned a trip to this year’s NAIA National Indoor Track Championships, Shorter College seniors Ashley Cousins and Kianca Dupree and backed up their qualifications Saturday when they claimed first places at the University of the South’s Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, Tenn.

Cousins, who qualified for the 60-meter and 200-meter nationals last week at the Indiana Relays, won the 55-meter title at Sewanee in 7.15 seconds.

After posting a national qualifying time in the 60-meter in Indiana, Dupree joined Cousins as a double national qualifier as she won the 200-meter dash at the Tiger Invitational in 24.90 seconds to qualify in national event to be held in Johnson City, Tenn., on March 6-8.

Jessica Coons also had a strong performance for the Lady Hawks taking third place in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.29 seconds, Maria Addison was fourth in the women’s triple jump (35 feet, 8 inches), and while Shorter’s 4x400 relay team was third (4:12.08).

The Lady Hawks finished fifth overall in the team standings, while Shorter’s men was ninth.

Joe Chisholm and Curtis John gave the Hawks a strong showing with respective second and third places in the shot put, Chisholm turning in a throw of 45-8½ feet and John stretching the tape with a 43-5¼ toss.

Jonathan Evans also took home a third place, posting a time of 8:14 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles.

Last week in Indiana, Nate Scott qualified for the nationals in the 60-meters; Remy Charpentier, Allen O’Neal and Derricus Johnson qualified in the 600-meters; Martin Hernandez qualified in the 5,000-meters; and the Hawks’ 4x400 and 4x800 relays teams qualified.

Shorter closes out the indoor track regular season next Saturday, competing in the UNC Chick-Fil-A Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Lady Vikings claim sixth at Kiawah

Amy Goble shot a tournament-best 71 on the second-day of the Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate to help No. 3 Berry to a sixth-place finish.

The Lady Vikings finished with a team score of 323 on day-two of the event to finish with a total score of 655 strokes.

Goble’s second-day score was an 11-stroke improvement from her day-one results. With a first-round of 82 she finished with a total of 153 to finish tied for 13th as an individual in the more-than 90 person tournament.

Jayne Curtis shot a second round of 81 to finish with a two-day total of 165. She finished tied for 33rd at the event. Gwen Wiencek, who led the Lady Vikings after shooting an opening-round 81, fired an 87 on the second day to finish tied for 40th with a total of 168.

Elizabeth Gemmill shot an 84 on the second day to finish with a score of 169. Callie Bennett shot back-to-back rounds of 87 to finish with a total of 174 and round out the Berry group.

Berry will be at the Ann Rhodes Southern Shootout in Calera, Ala., on Feb. 25-26.
