Picture the pristine beauty of the Garden of Eden. Now add a listless Adam and a naïve but bright-eyed Eve. Throw in some relationship humor by one of the greatest American writers and a three course meal and youve got an entertaining evening in Adairsville.
The 1902 Stock Exchange and Public Square Opera House brings The Diaries of Adam and Eve to area audiences.
The play is a comedy adapted by David Birney from original works by Mark Twain.
Area actors Zip Rampey and Susan Powell bring the Biblical characters to life.
These two creatures have met in the Garden of Eden and are trying to figure each other out, Powell said. Its very humorous and poignant. They discover the innate need that we all have for companionship.
The play follows Adam and Eves first encounter with each other and their very different views of the world around them. Humor takes the form of each of their very descriptive observations of the other.
She thinks hes lazy and he thinks she talks all the time, Powell said. The garden used to be so quiet before she showed up.
Powell said her character starts out wide-eyed and naïve but quickly becomes very curious, and its her desire to learn more that gets the couple into trouble.
Its a thoroughly entertaining play, she said. Twains humor is dry but very recognizable. He wrote this so long ago but the observations about the opposite sex are as true today as they were back then. Thats what makes it so funny.
