One man was killed and another injured Friday evening on Shorter Avenue after a westbound pickup truck hit a car that had stopped with its front end sticking out into the road from the IGA grocery store parking lot entrance, police said.
Winfred Diamond, 43, of 415 E. 20th St., was killed, said Chief Deputy Coroner Tony Cooper. The incident occurred at about 7:15 p.m.
Rome police officer Chris DeHart, who responded to the scene, said Everett Casey of Lyerly was driving a Ford F-150 westbound on Shorter Avenue when his truck struck Diamonds disabled Oldsmobile.
DeHart said the Oldsmobile apparently locked up as Diamond tried to leave the parking lot, with the vehicles front end left out in the roadway pointed west.
DeHart said Casey told police that he saw the vehicle and tried to go around it.
Casey was charged with felony vehicular manslaughter, misdemeanor DUI, making improper lane change and driving too fast for conditions, DeHart said.
Diamond was standing by the drivers side door when he was struck, DeHart said.
Clarence Singleton, 32, of 400 McDonald St., ran across the street to help Diamond before the collision and was behind the steering wheel of the Oldsmobile when the wreck occurred, DeHart said.
DeHart said Casey failed to make the corrections necessary to avoid the collision. Witnesses said the Oldsmobiles lights were on and the vehicle was visible, DeHart explained.
Diamond was pronounced dead at Floyd Medical Center. Singleton received serious shoulder injuries and was being treated in the emergency room at FMC late Friday.
