A Chattooga County couple is seeking $100,000 in damages from the alleged author of an Internet posting that alleges their involvement in illegal drug activity.

The suit, filed Dec. 5 in Chattooga County Superior Court, accuses Summerville resident Ken Busbin of libeling Ed and Brenda Hammitt with statements posted on a local Web site.

Summerville attorney Bobby Lee Cook, who filed the lawsuit, also is representing the couple in a $1 million libel case against the Web site’s owner, Teresa Watson of Rome. Cook has said that Watson libeled the couple by allowing the statements to be posted to her site.

Watson has denied responsibility for the posting and has threatened to file complaints against Cook and fellow attorneys through the State Bar of Georgia.
