The Shorter Hawks used a mix of old and new to pull out one of the most suspenseful victories in the young programs history Saturday night as they defeated Brevard 30-21 on the road.
With the game tied 21-21, Shorter kicker Lukas Gonzales booted a 52-yard field goal to push the Hawks over the Tornadoes 24-21 with 1.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
The All-Mid-South Conference player was perfect on extra points, going 3-for-3.
But Shorter College didnt end its season opener with Gonzales long shot.
On the resulting kickoff, the former Model standout sent the ball down field where a Shorter player disrupted a lateral pass between two Brevard returners.
Hawks specialist Greg Eswine then scooped up the live ball and, as time ran out, dashed 25 yards into the end zone for six more points.
The nine points in less than seven seconds capped off a game that began with Shorter giving up 13 unanswered points.
But then the Hawks offense, led by new starting quarterback Drew Elrod, found their rhythm with less than a minute left in the first half to score on a one-yard pass from Elrod to sophomore Kevin Cone.
Shorter then got a three-yard touchdown run from transfer Pierre Toran with 6:57 to go in the third. The Gonzales kick put them ahead 14-13.
A touchdown to cap a 55-yard drive and a two-point conversion by Brevard with 37 seconds until the fourth quarter however made it a seven-point game.
Dennis Stanley tied the ran in for another Shorter score that led to the 21-21 tie in the first part of the fourth quarter and Jamie Stewart intercepted a Brevard pass with 5:49 to play but the Hawks were left waiting until the final minute highlights before retaking the lead.
Shorter will be on the road again this Saturday to take on Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
