... ...With a lot of players seeing time on the field and no serious injuries, Shorter College’s preseason scrimmage Saturday morning was a good way to end the first full week of practice.

“I was pretty much pleased for a lot of reasons,” Hawks head coach Phil Jones said.

“We got to look at every single player in an 11-on-11 situation and see in a short amount of time how they’ve developed since they’ve been in our system.

“And, if anyone has that natural talent, we can see their playmaking ability that comes out when playing a live scrimmage.”

The scrimmage, which was called by officials, will be utilized as part of the Shorter coaches’ decision on who will start come time for their first game on Sept. 1 at Brevard College in North Carolina.

“There’s a lot up for grabs before game time as far as who plays where,” Jones said.

ordan and Caleb Carmean, saw time behind center at the Hawks’ practice facility in Garden Lakes.

Once again, Jones touted the offensive line for their production in the morning session and was optimistic about Shorter’s defense this season.

“I feel like our offensive line has begun to gel and they really give great effort to improve,” Jones said. “We have the capacity to be a pretty solid defensive team as well.”

In all, Jones said that no major surprises caught the coaches’ attention but that a crowd of gathered Hawks fans was helpful in their support.

“I was grateful that so many parents and people were at the scrimmage because it gave us an opportunity to see the effects of having fans and outside factors on the players,” Jones said.

This week will be an important one for Shorter as practice takes on a different itinerary following the production of a depth chart and fall semester classes beginning on Thursday.

“The biggest change in the next week will be personnel,” Jones said.

“We’ll begin our game plan and complete and polish our kicking game, the players will start classes and we’ll resume what is a more normal situation for us.”
