Authorities say a few simple precautions can help people avoid the sometimes-costly headaches of clearing up an identity theft case.
Police recommend not carrying around a Social Security card or using the number on identifying documents like checks or drivers licenses, according to Mark Greenawalt, an investigator with the Floyd County Police Department.
Greenawalt also suggests shredding all trash and mail with personal information, dropping mail to be sent off at collection boxes and having holds placed on mail during vacations.
Also keep anything containing personal information like wallets or purses out of thieves reach, and keep all personal files in a safe, secure place at home.
Online, he recommends that people use complicated passwords and make sure their anti-virus, firewall and spyware are current.
Randy Gore, a detective with the Rome Police Department, offers classes by appointment about identity theft prevention for concerned residents. Those interested can contact Gore through the RPDs Criminal Investigation Division at 706-238-5120.
