The battle against litter in Rome, and Georgia, is going to the next level. A half-day law enforcement training workshop will be held at the Coosa Country Club on Feb. 28, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop is designed to help law enforcement personnel get involved in the fight against litter. The Rome workshop is one in a series taking place across the state that aims to provide the tools and training needed by law enforcement officers to punish litter offenders.
"We're excited about the new 'Litter. It Costs You' initiative and feel that this law enforcement workshop will help to make littering violations a priority in our region. We want this to serve as a clear signal to violators that litter prevention is serious business," said Mary Hardin Thornton of Keep Rome-Floyd County Beautiful. "The new litter law empowers us to make a bigger difference in our community."
The workshop will feature presentations from local and state officials. In-depth discussions of the Comprehensive Litter Abatement and Prevention Act of 2006, local case studies and resources from the statewide Litter. The "It Costs You" campaign will help law enforcement officials improve their ability to enforce the new litter laws.
Organizers say the goal of the half-day workshop is to provide Rome's law enforcement community with the practical tools and examples to assist in their efforts to enforce litter laws. Studies show that enforcement plays an important role in stopping litter. Litter is identified as a major indicator of neighborhood decline. Officials say litter creates an impression that no one cares within the community, which results in more littering, vandalism and even escalates to more serious crime.
