In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, two Rome churches carry on the annual tradition of blessing the community’s furry, feathered and finned residents.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Transfiguration Episcopal Church both conducted services Sunday to bless animals.

Rome residents were encouraged to bring their pets, regardless of species, to be blessed.

Father Michael Owens, rector of the Transfiguration Episcopal Church, blessed dozens of animals including dogs, cats, horses, a fish and a crab.

Tags were given to pets blessed at the service.

The Rev. James K. Yeary, priest associate, blessed animals at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church’s annual Blessing of the Animals that was also held Sunday.
