A suspicious device that later turned out to be a camera receiver brought the Floyd County bomb squad to a Shannon gas station during an arrest Thursday afternoon.

According to Maj. Mike Brock and Capt. Tom Ewing of the Floyd County Police Department:

The device was spotted in a black Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Bernard L. Brown, 47, of 79 Shoals Ferry Road. Brown was arrested around 6 p.m. at the Village Shop convenience store at Ga. 53 and Burlington Road in connection with a stolen boat allegedly found on Brown’s property.

The Floyd County bomb squad was called in to investigate after a device with what appeared to be a fuse and wires running out of it was discovered in Brown’s car.

The device turned out to be a wireless receiver for a pinhole camera that Brown had mounted in his car for surveillance purposes.

Brown was being held with no bond Thursday night, charged with theft by receiving stolen property.
