A year after joining the American Indoor Football League, the Rome Renegades will officially announce another league change today.
Only this time there is quite a bit of vested interest involved in the move for the Renegades.
The Renegades will join six other indoor teams from other leagues in the newly formed World Indoor Football League, Romes management announced Wednesday.
The league will be operated as a collective by the respective team owners, instead of by a president as the Renegades have dealt with over the past two years in two different leagues.
The move to form the new league was spearheaded by Rome businessman Harry Pierce and his management group, which owns the Renegades and the Raleigh Rebels.
Both the Renegades and Rebels will move into the new WIFL along with the Augusta Spartans, Charleston (S.C.) Sand Sharks, Daytona Beach (Fla.) Thunder, Huntington (W.V.) Heroes and the Osceola (Fla.) Outlaws.
We recently hosted a league championship game, and I was so impressed with the quality of our product, Pierce said in a press release Wednesday. But as good as the product has been, it seems that all we hear about in indoor football is poor management, questionable business decisions and under-financed operations.
Then, there are always certain incidents that have no place at all in what is supposed to be a professional sports environment, he said.
We are tired of the unnecessary drama and we are sure the fans and players are, as well. Theres no better time to do something about this situation than now. A new day for indoor football begins now.
Pierce and Renegades management are expected to release more information today about the league, which opens for play in Feb. 2007.
