Georgia Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss handed the GOP a firewall against Democrats eager to flex their newfound political muscle in Washington, winning a bruising runoff battle Tuesday night that had captured the national limelight.
In Floyd County, Chambliss beat Democratic challenger Jim Martin 70 percent to 30 percent, or 12,084 votes to 5,192. The turnout was 37 percent.

Six-year-old Martina Hons eyes glistened and her smile widened when she saw Santa Claus make an appearance at the Rome Christmas parade Tuesday night.
She was one of hundreds of children at the annual parade who said Santa was their favorite highlight of the parade. An estimated 20,000 people showed up to watch the event.
This year, the Rome Christmas parade was themed A Family Christmas and featured about 100 brightly illuminated floats, horse-drawn wagons, antique autos and colorful marching groups...

Mohawk Industries announced it will close its Shannon distribution center, phasing out operations during the next two months.
The 79 employees who work at the facility located at the intersection of New Calhoun Highway and Burlington Drive were notified Monday of the closing, Mohawk officials said.
The company said the decision to close the 500,000-square-foot Shannon facility reflects efficiencies in warehousing and distribution gained through investments in training, technology and inventory control that have reduced warehouse capacity needs.

RALEIGH, N.C. The question followed Paul Johnson ever since Georgia Tech hired him: Would his spread-option offense work at the highest level of college football?
It certainly clicked well enough in his first year to bring him a coaching honor.

MONTREAL Andrei Kostitsyn scored with 5:11 remaining and the Montreal Canadiens recovered from blowing a three-goal lead earlier in the third period to beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-4 on Tuesday night.
Kostitsyn, who scored against Johan Hedberg, helped set up two of Montreals first three goals as the Canadiens carried a 3-0 lead into the third period.
