Saxby Chambliss handed the GOP a firewall against Democrats eager to flex their newfound political muscle in Washington, winning a bruising runoff battle Tuesday night that had captured the national limelight.     Rome Christmas parade brings holiday cheer

    Six-year-old Martina Hon’s eyes glistened and her smile widened when she saw Santa Claus make an appearance at the Rome Christmas parade Tuesday night. She was one of hundreds of children at the annual parade who said Santa was their favorite highlight of the parade. An estimated 20,000 people showed up to watch the event.     Mohawk Industries announced it will close its Shannon distribution center, phasing out operations during the next two months. The 79 employees who work at the facility — located at the intersection of New Calhoun Highway and Burlington Drive — were notified Monday of the closing, Mohawk officials said.
