According to a report released last week that gave the school district failing grades for reaching academic goals under MAPS for KIDS, the district has no strategic plan to accomplish those goals.

School board members said Monday they are committed to creating a strategic plan.

“We all know where we want to go,” Angela Z. Monson, board chairman, said. “This will be the road map to get there.”

“I have given [district staff members] a 30-day window to develop that kind of document that this board can review.”

Lori Dickinson, executive director of the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools, said that organization is ready and willing to help.

The report that said the district had failed to reach academic goals was issued by the foundation.

“Thirty days might be a tight turnaround,” Mrs. Dickinson said, urging the board to include a broad contingent to work on a plan.

“This is probably the best time to work for Oklahoma City public schools in the past 50 years,” Supt. Karl Springer said, “because we have an open door.”

The report criticized how the district has performed on academic benchmarks set in 2001 as part of the MAPS for KIDS sales tax.

The foundation’s executive director said there still are many areas in which the district needs to improve.
