The father of a former professional basketball player has admitted to a fatal shooting, a spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police Department said.

Edgar L. Combs, 70, was arrested early Sunday at his son’s house.

Leroy Combs, Edgar Combs’ son, told officers he discovered his father “holding a semi-automatic handgun” after hearing a gunshot.

Virginia K. Moore, 54, the victim of the shooting, was shot in the head, police records said.

The older Mr. Combs admitted to the shooting of Mrs. Moore when he was being photographed for a mug shot after his arrest.

He asked at the police station why he was being photographed, Officer Chris Cargill wrote in an affidavit.

“When I told him we were investigating a shooting, Edgar [Combs] stated, ‘I did the shooting,’ ” Officer Cargill wrote in the affidavit.

Sgt. Michael Veasey reported in another affidavit that Leroy Combs described his father as having a “blank stare” in the moments after the shooting.

Police report seizing as evidence a .25-cal. semi-automatic handgun, an empty vodka bottle, a half-full vodka bottle and a broken glass from the floor of the house.

Leroy Combs played basketball at Oklahoma State University from 1979-1983, and went on to play for the Indiana Pacers.

The younger Mr. Combs is now a coach at Northwest Classen High School.
