TULSA--Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry will honor three Tulsa men and two churches tonight at its annual assembly and awards banquet. Tulsa philanthropist Henry Zarrow will receive the Russell Bennett Award, given to a person who provides courageous social justice leadership in the Tulsa area.
Mr. Zarrow was instrumental in the creation of the Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless and other projects.
Rev. Jay Hoyt will receive the Ron McDaniel Recognition, given to a person who embodies the spirit and furthers the mission of Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry.
Rev. Hoyt was acting executive director of the organization, receiving no pay or benefits, after Jim Mishler resigned.
Richard Small will receive the Don Newby/Ben Hill Recognition, given to a person or congregation who or that has demonstrated leadership in the fight against racism.
The Interfaith Understanding Recognition will go to the Southern Hills United Methodist Church.
The award honors a person or congregation who or that has promoted an ecumenical spirit in Tulsa.
The Trinity Episcopal Church will receive the Interfaith Service Recognition, presented to a congregation that helps meet the basic needs of the poor, elderly or children.
Trinity Episcopal founded the Iron Gate soup kitchen.
The annual assembly will include Tapestry of Faith, a gallery of religious art from Tulsas faith communities.
The art will be on display from 5 to 8 p.m.
