Forward Desmond Mason of the Thunder makes a dunk against the Milwaukee Bucks last night at Ford Center.
The Thunder failed to clap too loudly as Oklahoma’s new NBA team lost its season opening game last night at the Ford Center.

The team got a resounding slap from the Milwaukee Bucks as the long-anticipated National Basketball Association team faced its first challenge, losing 98-87.

The home team trailed by double-digits for the final 29 minutes of the game, trailing by as many as 24 points on the scoreboard at one disappointing juncture of the game.

The Thunder will face the world champion Boston Celtics here next week, so that Oklahoma’s NBA team might be expected to lose two in a row, since the Bucks aren’t really in the same league.

“We didn’t play like we were capable of playing,” Coach P.J. Carlesimo of the Thunder said after Wednesday’s loss, “and that’s a shame.”

That probably was a candidate for an Understatement of the Year Award.

The Thunder struggled throughout the game, with the team getting a slow start (with immeasurable improvements made in the second half.

The team played to a full house, though, with more than 19,000 cheering the Thunder on from the stands.

The fans heralded their team with thunderous cheers every time the Oklahoma players did something right.

Oklahomans know how to show their appreciation.

Fans applauded at halftime as the Thunder left the court with the score at 50-35, and they gave the team a standing ovation even though Thunder had lost by 11 points at game’s end.

The Thunder had 16 assists and 19 turnovers, so that a loss was really no surprise.
