The nightlife and yes we do have one

Spice, Citywalk, Skybar and The Rok Bar are names I’m sure you have all heard when a conversation strikes up about the night life here. What you also might hear in that same conversation is how there isn’t much to do here in Oklahoma. Mandi Porras, a student at OSUOKC, said this about our nightlife or lack there of… “There just isn’t anything to do here. The clubs get old and it just gets boring real fast.” This isn’t the first time I

(I’m pretty sure you either) have heard someone say this.

When I hear people say things like this it makes me ask myself “How do you expect to find something you haven’t even looked for?” There are a plethora of options to pick from downtown and outside of downtown. Yes! Really! I know it might be hard for you to believe but there is. All you have to do is step outside of the box. Heard of Paradise City on W I-40??? Or what about Venu Bar? That is just across the street from Spice! I know I said outside of downtown but Venu is a club/bar that I think many people would enjoy if they would just step outside of their box. “Venu is different from all the other clubs. The environment is different. It’s not just one group of people that go there, it’s a mixed crowd. And the music is awesome too!” Jeff Sykes, a student at Rose State states. There are plenty of clubs out there that people haven’t explored yet simply because they haven’t looked. “It’s an easy choice to just go to clubs like Spice or Skybar because everyone has heard of them and knows where they are at.” says Ashtyn Johnson, a frequent club hitter. “I’m sure there are more clubs out there I just haven’t looked.”

Finally! Someone admits it! They just haven’t looked. You noticed how I used the word options above? I used it because clubs aren’t the only thing to do at night here in Oklahoma City. Don’t worry you can still enjoy a tasty beverage as well.

Have you heard of Hawaiian Dons? If you haven’t, you are missing out my friend. They serve drinks that are the size of my head! (This is very large just in case you haven’t witnessed the circumference of my head.) Hawaiian Dons reminds me of a sport bar type of setting but on the weekends at night that place is packed! The drinks are reasonably priced considering the size, they play a variety of music and you also have a mixed crowd.

Or why not enjoy the new theatre that was built in Moore, Warren theatre? This is the largest movie theatre I have seen! It’s ridiculous! “Oh Kay, we can’t enjoy a nice alcoholic beverage there!” Touché, my good friend they have the balcony for those who want a drink and get this. They offer at-your-seat service from their wait staff. You can order food, concession snacks and drinks off their menu. No getting up! It’s crazy right? The food is really good too! I’ve only heard of theatres like this in other states and now we have our own.

With October coming around the corner that also gives us another option to add to our nightlife selection. Our very own NBA team starts their season! Did you ever notice that the night scene became more populated downtown when the hornets were here? It’s because all of you wanted to be out where the basketball players were. Well come October you have another chance to be NBA “groupies” and I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Which brings me to my next place of entertainment, have you ever taken a moment to look at the schedule for the events being held at the Ford Center?

Something goes on the almost on a weekly basis. What about the arena football games? Why didn’t anyone go to those? The attendance did come up a bit but have you ever thought that maybe if we showed more interest in the sports activities that we have here (besides college football) that other venues might look to us to start something bigger and better then what we have. Isn’t that one of the important factors that helped us get the NBA team we have now? We showed major interest in Hornets when they were here so they (the NBA) felt that we could handle our own team. Maybe if we show enough interest in Arena Football maybe one day we could even get our own NFL team?! I know it seems a little far fetched but it could happen.

My fellow Oklahomans, the point I’m trying to get across to you is that there document are plenty of things to do in Oklahoma City. All you have to do is step outside of the box, break your normal routine and LOOK. Look for something else to do besides go to the same club every weekend. We need to show in interest in what we have here and maybe that will conjure other businesses to open up more activities for us to do at night. If you have no idea where to start just Google night clubs in Oklahoma City and they list is endless. Another good source to find some entertainment is Wimgo.com, this site shows what events are going on in Oklahoma City.

If you have any other options that you think your fellow Oklahomans would enjoy please email me and let me know at kechols85@gmail.com. Let’s get the word out! Let’s mingle and jingle and all that jazz! You can’t expect for other people to look at Oklahoma as this wonderful place if we don’t even look at it as a wonderful place. For us to realize that we have a wonderful place is to go out there and explore like Christopher Columbus!
