We are glad to be able to report that U.S. Rep. Dan Boren (Dem., Okla.), having gotten himself in something of a tissy by trying to out-rightwing the rightwingers and waffling over whether to support the man who is now the presumptive presidential nominee for Congressman Boren's party, is now having to do a bit of backtracking as he tries salvaging a degree of credibility after being incredibly stupid the other day.Little Boren, the only Democrat in Oklahoma's five-man congressional delegation, seemed to have been fearful that the Republicans would come after him as he seeks reelection if he revealed himself to be too libral, and (showing himself to be completely devoid of what someone once called testicular fortitude) came out with the astounding statement that he would nominate U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (Dem., Ill.) when they both got to the convention, but he, simply, could not bring himself to endorse the presumptive nominee. Sen. Obama is too liberal, the silly Congressman Boren said.
Incidentally, Little Boren held out to the very end before lining up with the vast majority of the Super Delegates from Oklahoma to become committed to one of the candidates, and, once Sen. Obama had clinched the nomination, the congressman from Little Dixie, Okla., said lamely that the question of to whom he would commit his Super Delegate pledge was then a moot issue. (Well, we guess so, since he had dragged his feet as long as he could to keep pledging to the man who had clearly long before June 3 was going to be the Democratic Party nominee.
Now, after having been taken to the woodshed by, hopefully, his constituents (and his father, too), Congressman Boren tried to distance himself from his own previously made statements. Now, he is claiming that we didnt hear him right.
Earlier statements I made about the presidential race have been misunderstood, Congressman Boren said.
I want to make it clear [that] I will vote for our designated nominee at the Democratic convention and in November.
I thought I was emphasizing I may not agree with Sen. Obama on some issues, the two-term lawmaker said in a written statement released by his reelection campaign.
Boy, hes almost expert at the Art of Doubletalk!
This is not the first time that Little Boren has demonstrated a paucity of courage and proved to be a disappointment.
Congressman Boren came under fire from the Cherokee Freedmen of Oklahoma, who staged a protest at his offices in Muskogee some months ago.
The freedmen were protesting Congressman Borens opposition to a bill introduced by a Black congresswoman to cutoff all federal funds going to the Cherokee Tribe of Oklahoma until that group dispenses with its efforts to deny tribal citizenship rights to freedmen.
Congressman Boren has said the issue ought to be settled by the courts (and perhaps it ought to be), but what was needed was for him to show some character by standing up for what is right rather than bowing and scraping to appease the Cherokee Tribe members who are behind this travesty of justice. We say, yes, let the matter be settled in court, but, until that happens, deny the Cherokee Tribe the federal funds until it is. Maybe if we do that, the Cherokees just might be convinced to settle out of court.
Little Boren should get some testicular fortitude, even if he has to borrow some from his dad.
