Rangel Steps Down!
U.S. Rep. Charles B. Rangel (Dem., N.Y.) on Wednesday said he was giving up the chairmanship of the powerful tax-writing committee of the House of Representatives. He has been under increasing pressure to resign as ethics investigations continue.

Douglass Principal is Attacked by Man
The principal of Douglass High School was attacked in the school’s parking lot on Tuesday by a man officials do not believe is a student.

Some are saying the attack is the result of burgeoning racial tensions on the campus, according to a report on the Website of KWTV News.

After the attack, the principal drove himself to the emergency room, it was reported.

Dr. Brian Staples, who became principal of Douglass High in 2008, was back in his office yesterday.

Something’s Missing
According to a report released last week that gave the school district failing grades for reaching academic goals under MAPS for KIDS, the district has no strategic plan to accomplish those goals.

School board members said Monday they are committed to creating a strategic plan.

“We all know where we want to go,” Angela Z. Monson, board chairman, said. “This will be the road map to get there.”

“I have given [district staff members] a 30-day window to develop that kind of document that this board can review.”

Former Logan County Sheriff is Dead at 81
GUTHRIE--Retired Logan County Sheriff J. C. Burris Sr., the first Black elected county sheriff in Oklahoma, died Feb. 25.

He was 81.

He was born on Oct. 28, 1928, in Tom, Okla., to Prince Henry and Lena Simpson Burris.

In 1945, he served in the U.S. Army.

He lived in Oklahoma City for a time, working at Tinker U.S. Air Force Base and the Guthrie Job Corps Center.

While he lived in Oklahoma City, Mr. Burris served as a deacon and as treasurer of the Church of the Living God of the Garden Days Addition.
