What do you use Photo Galleries for on your site? Some publishers use them strictly to catalog and sell newspaper photos. Which, of course, is a great use.

Other publishers have come up with inventive ways to induce greater reader traffic and inure enormous good will with readers both near and far by expanding those galleries to include reader photos. Below are just a few examples that we've come across in our research. You'll no doubt be able to generate a few additional ideas.

One paper publishes a Birthday Gallery. Readers can submit photos of friends or relatives celebrating a birthday for the month's gallery. They can include a one-line birthday wish as well. Now some papers do the same thing in their print classifieds and charge a small amount for the ad. Online the photo can be in color, readers can be asked to email the photo, and with MyWebPal, there's no additional charge for galleries.

Another publisher runs a Photo of the Week gallery. This could be implemented as a contest for readers, with the winner receiving a free roll of film from a local camera shop, film developing, or any kind of giveaway that the paper could come up with, with the help and sponsorship of a great advertiser (you see where our mind goes!).
