During their home game against Haddon Heights on Tuesday (February 9 at 7pm), the Haddonfield girls' varsity basketball team will raise money for a local family whose seven-year-old daughter is battling acute lymphoma leukemia.

The team has invited members of the Haddonfield Youth Basketball Association (HYBA) to join them in the effort. HYBA members who wear their HYBA jerseys to the game will be admitted free and will be invited to eat pizza and meet the Lady Dawgs after the game.

Donations collected during the game will support The Helping Hands for the Strobel Family Fund. Mia Strobel, a second grader at Central School, was diagnosed with acute lymphoma leukemia at the age of three. She went into remission as she entered kindergarten, only to learn this past August that the disease had returned.

While Mia was at the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) for over six weeks receiving aggressive chemotherapy treatments, her doctors began to search for a bone marrow donor for her. (A bone marrow transplant delivers healthy marrow stem cells to patients whose marrow is either not functioning properly, or has been destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation treatments. It also gives people like Mia a chance to rally and fight the disease.) On January 14, Mia underwent the transplant procedure using marrow donated by her 11-year-old brother, Steven – a perfect match.

Supporters who are not able to be at the game on February 9 may wish to attend the Remington & Vernick Engineers Charity Committee's 16th Annual Charity Bowling Tournament at Baker Lanes in Cherry Hill on Saturday, March 27. Proceeds from that event will benefit the Strobel family also.
