In the United States, Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the Battle hymn of the Republic, first suggested Mother’s Day in 1872. However, it wasn’t until 1907 when Anna Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began to establish a national observance. It was made official when President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, proclaimed Mother’s Day as a holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May.
