Buckman

By Susan Lindsay

The potential redevelopment of Washington High School into a future inner east side community center with pool, field and protected trees continues to highlight and excite the discussions and activities of the neighborhood association. This November 2nd, the last advisory committee meeting will be held to agree on a recommendation for a preferred “option” for the center. At press time, the remaining options include an all new building at 12th and Stark or the community center built within the walls of Washington High itself. Come to the November 12th BCA meeting for all the updates, to share your ideas and give feedback and especially to discuss where this process is headed both politically and financially. Planning has begun in earnest for another new and very fun BCA project, that of throwing a neighborhood picnic next summer. In conjunction with National Night Out, the BCA is helping to organize a large picnic and event, “Party in the Park: Buckman Community Picnic” at Colonel Summers Park, Sunday August 8th, 4-8pm. The gathering will be totally family friendly with games and activities for kids of all ages. Local businesses will there with food booths and products. There will be music and games, food and fun. We will need a lot of help organizing this event, and it is a great way to meet your neighbors and contribute to building community. (We’ve been meeting for picnic organizing meetings at the Lucky Lab) Contact the BCA directly at buckman_comm2000@hotmail.com if you are interested in joining the picnic crew. We’d be happy to have you join us. Upcoming BCA meetings include this November 12th where we’ll get an update on that crazy sewer project that is wrecking havoc on the north side of Buckman, as well as a new project planned for Buckman Elementary among many items. There will be pizza and drinks in November, so come hungry. Mark your calendars for the December BCA Holiday Potluck, Dec. 10th, 6:30pm. We’ll have food from a local restaurant and if you care to, you’ll bring something to share. 2009-10 BCA meetings schedule: Board meeting, 1st TH, General Meeting, 2nd TH, land use and Public Safety, Last TH. All meetings are welcoming and open to the public and are held at Buckman Elementary, 320 SE 16th Ave., 7pm. The Board and General meetings are in the Library. The land use meeting is held upstairs in Room 216.
