Winkelman Fire Chief, center, takes his oath of office as President of the Volunteer Fire Fighters of Arizona. Winkelman Fire Chief Bobby Apodaca was elected president of the Volunteer Fire Fighters of Arizona (VFFA) during its annual conference hosted by the Winkelman Fire Department June 14. Nearly 50 firefighters from all around Arizona attended the conference and enjoyed a full day of activities. Meetings were held in the morning at the Hayden Senior Center followed by lunch at the Winkelman Flats Park. In the afternoon, the firefighters participated in fire department games that included Barrel Squirt, Tug-of-War and Maken’ Break competitions with Safford, Thatcher and Winkelman taking all the top spots. Meetings were again held later in the afternoon and a banquet with the swearing in of new officers was held in the evening. Apodaca, a long-time volunteer firefighter, served on the VFFA board prior to being elected to his current post. A Tug-a-War competition was heated…in more ways than one…during the VFFA fire department games held on a very hot June 14 at Winkleman Flats Park. Relief came in the form of the Barrel Squirt competition. Teams from Safford, Thatcher and Winkelman claimed the top spots.
