What killed the whistle?
Helen Barrett
“Whistle while you work!” doot, doott ,doot, doot, doot, doot, doot.. Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” made those words and sounds famous, but it seems like no one whistles anymore. What happened to the whistle? Did it die from politically incorrectness? Were the germophobes so paranoid that whistling was stifled? I never mastered the art of whistling a happy tune. My puny whistle emitted by extreme effort in puckering my lips and blowing, never sounded that tuneful or happy. Truthfully, it sounded frail and pathetic in ...

Junkman’s Gems
Jim Scribner
As you read this, I hope to be safely home from the trip to Port Aransas, Texas. Dad has been going there for years to fish, so Jack and I went to visit a few days. The name "Sterling" was already in use by another town along this same stretch of Santa Fe track that the U. S. Post Office used as a mail route. The town went through the names "Virgil" and "Kermit," but those were also rejected by postal ...

Sports Spasms
Jim Barker
It’s getting to where a body can’t venture out into the wilds anymore without some new pest or clear and present danger to deal with. Last week came news that a rather large alligator was found in a stretch of the Red River that borders southeastern Oklahoma. Add to that the zebra mussel that has been busily infesting the state’s lakes and streams over the past dozen or so years; those new-fangled jumping carp that are already in the Mississippi and some of its tributaries; or the fear of being attacked by a mountain lion or a wild feral boar hog on the way to or from ...
