Garbage haulers will collect leaves, tree limbs and other yard waste from residents on regularly scheduled yard waste collection days as we move into the fall leaf and yard waste collection season.
Yard waste can include leaves, grass, tree limbs, branches and other naturally occurring materials. Limbs, branches, and wood set out for removal shall be tied securely in bundles not to exceed 48 inches in length. Each bundle may not weight more than 35 lbs. and should be placed within three (3) feet of the curb or alley line (whichever location is established by hauler) no earlier than 24 hours before the established removal time.
Landscape waste, (other than limbs and branches as cited above), shall be placed in paper compost bags OR approved containers (no larger than 32 gallon cans with tight fitting lids and opposing handles) marked with a yellow Yard Waste Only sticker. Containers and/or bags are to be placed within three (3) feet of the curb or alley line, whichever location is designated by hauler for pick up, no earlier than 24 hours before the established removal time.
If cans are used for yard waste removal, they must be used for yard waste only as regular refuse (garbage) will contaminate the composting facility. Residents should contact their individual hauler to determine which day of the week is for yard waste collection as the date may vary by hauler. The Yard Waste Only stickers may be obtained free of charge at the City of Decaturs Water Payment Window on the second floor of the Decatur Civic Center or on the third floor of the citys Department of Economic & Urban Development.
Residents can watch a video detailing proper leaf and limb bundling on the citys new Facebook page (facebook.com and search for city of Decatur), YouTube channel (youtube.com/accessdecatur) or running regularly on cable TV channel 18.
Haulers are required make weekly yard waste collections year round, collections which are made automatically April 1 through December 31. Residents must notify haulers of their desire for yard waste collection January 1 through March 31 but are still entitled to an unlimited collection amount during this time provided that the yard waste is properly bagged or bundled.
