Lady Hawks win County Championship

HIGH SPRINGS – It was a championship night for the High Springs Community School (HSCS) Lady Hawks Volleyball team as they won the Alachua County Middle School Championship Wednesday evening. The 12-0 Hawks faced 10-1 Westwood Middle School at Santa Fe High School, the host site for the championship match. ALACHUA – Twenty-two year old soccer player Devala Gorrick moved from West Virginia to rural Alachua in 1989 at the age of two, the youngest in a large family, with five older brothers and one sister. His father and mother, Dennis and Diane Gorrick, signed all the kids up for the local soccer and basketball league. “We spent a lot of time driving from game to game, but it was worth it to keep the kids fit and busy,” laughs soccer mom, Diane. The girls went undefeated this past weekend in Live Oak to become District 4 Champions. Next stop: States in Ponte Vedra beginning July 1st. RICK BABSTON/Alachua County Today Tony Pedregon in his Quaker State Chevrolet was overtaken by Bob Tasca III driving his Motocraft Quick Lane Ford Mustang at 280.72 mph down Gainesville's raceway.
GAINESVILLE – The four professional category winners at the 40th annual NHRA ACDelco Gatornationals on Sunday have a combined 63 national event wins. On the surface, that would give the appearance of a veteran group hoisting the famed “Wally” trophies presented to the winner of each NHRA event. However, a whopping 60 of those wins are owned by just two drivers. SFHS field named after Shane

ALACHUA – Like a queen ant building her colony from the ground up, one local woman has faithfully guided Santa Fe High School (SFHS), nurturing the girls’ sports program for more than 32 years. SFHS Dean Loretta Shane started working at the school in 1976, which marked the beginning of the second year of its female sports program. Since her initiation into the uncharted world of girls’ sports, Shane has established herself as a pioneer while fighting for her teams’ rights to play and be heard.
