Judge confirms Grupo’s plan for ASARCO

In a ruling released Friday, US District Court Judge Andrew Hanen confirmed the reorganization plan proposed by ASARCO LLC parent Grupo Mexico, SAB. Hanen agreed with the earlier recommendation of the Bankruptcy Court. The bankruptcy case, ongoing for more than four years, may now be resolved by the end of the year. Hanen addressed multiple objections to the Bankruptcy Court’s recommendation of Grupo’s plan but didn’t find reason to disagree with the earlier court’s recommendation. Smelter closed until November 22nd
ASARCO LLC shut down its Hayden copper smelter on Nov. 11 for maintenance. A press release from the company said that 72 operations employees would be on furlough, or leave without pay, during the shutdown. That represents leave for about 12 percent of the smelter’s employees. Maintenance staff will continue working. The smelter is being shutdown, “to replace key components and auxiliary equipment in the oxygen plants and in the wet gas handling system for the flash furnace,” according to Doug McAllister, ASARCO executive vice president. Learning on the job . . .
Three Imaging/Radiology students from Central Arizona College are currently doing internships with Cobre Valley Community Hospital. Josh Faith of Mesa, Robert Guzman and Samajia Perez both of Hayden are working under the leadership of the CVCH Imaging Department two days a week while taking courses at CAC. Classes include Physics, Principles of Radiological Exposure, and Positioning, and Anatomy Part II. Next semester Samajia, Robert, and Josh will be on the CVCH campus five days a week as they complete their clinical assignments. “Our Mission is Your Health.” (Submitted photo)

  A large swath of Arizona is in extreme drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. 

  Water is a hot topic these days as more people move to our desert state and compete with existing municipal, agricultural, and mining water users.
