Larry Ramirez is the Community Schools Director for the Mammoth-San Manuel School District.
Although a concept of a community school has been around since the 1800’s, it was not until the late 1970s and early 1980s that community schools became integrated in public schools nationwide. It is believed that between 1932 and 1935 Frank Manley a Physical Education Teacher and Recreation Supervisor in the Flint, Michigan Public School System presented ideas on how schools could begin to solve various community problems. Helping Haiti
The Oracle School District has launched a donation drive for the survivors of the Haitian earthquake. In the last two weeks students from first through eighth grade have collected over 1,000 items for the Haitians. Helen Nack, School Counselor at Mountain Vista started the relief drive. She thought it would be a “good service project for the kids to think outside of themselves” and help others. “The kids were excited about it and wanted to help,” she said.
