Anna L. Burt Anna L. Burt, age 85, of Laurel, Md., died Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at Patuxent River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Laurel, Md. Anna was born on May 21, 1924 in the Scaggsville area of Laurel where she was raised and lived most of her life. She is survived by her husband Clyde Burt of Laurel, Md; one Daughter, Brenda L. Fulton of Laurel, Md., two sons, Junior Rice of Laurel, Md. and Wayne Rice of Florida. She is also survived by 3 sisters; Rosie Smith, Alice Simpson and Mildred Day and 2 brothers; Billy and Johnny Whitehead. Also survived by 10 grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and 2 great great great-grandchildren. Anna had Anna had a very special relationship with all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren Mrs. Burt was predeceased by her parents Walter and Viola Whitehead, her daughter Patsy Rice and her 1st husband Albert "Punk Rice. Anna enjoyed being a housewife and taking care of her family. She also worked as a sales associate at the Hecht Company in the Laurel Shopping Center and after they moved to the Laurel Mall. Anna enjoyed life, having a good time and making people laugh. Arrangements were handled by Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A., 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, Md., where the family received friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Funeral service was at Donaldson Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 30, 2009 with Chaplain Warren Litchfield officiating. Interment was at St. John's Lutheran in (Pfeiffer's Corner) Ellicott City, Md. If desired memorial donations may be made to the Beltsville Lions Club, P.O. Box 252, Beltsville, Maryland 20705.

Charles Robert Sands Charles "Chuck" Sands, son of James & Martha Sands, of Randallstown, Md, departed this world on Thursday, October 15, 2009. Chuck was a graduate of Glenelg High School. He was an environmental engineer at Centennial H. S. Chuck leaves to mourn one son, Charles Sands, Jr; one daughter, Keisha Sands; one brother, James Sands; three sisters, Judy Harris, Maggie Sands, Nancy Griffin; two grandchildren Deasia and Aniyah Moore; and a large host of other relatives and friends.

DAVID CLARKE David Clarke, 91, former Navy Lieutenant, Howard County farmer and Maryland State Chemist, died on October 26th at Angel's Touch Assisted Living in West Friendship, MD. He grew up on his family's farm near what is now the intersection of Rt. 175 and Thunder Hill Road in Columbia, MD. After graduation from Washington College in 1941, he joined the Navy, receiving his commission as Ensign in May 1942. He served on the USS North Carolina in both Atlantic and Pacific theaters and was promoted to Lieutenant. In 1944 he transferred to the submarine service, serving on the USS Spike Fish. After returning from the Navy in 1946, he spent the next ten years operating the family farm, where he raised beef cattle, sheep, poultry, hogs and grain. In 1957, following a short period with the US Department of Agriculture, he joined the State Chemist section of the Maryland Department of Agriculture at the University of Maryland. This section is responsible for administering laws controlling the content and labeling of commercial feeds, fertilizers, pesticides and liming materials sold within the state. In 1961, he became Chief Chemist of the section, and in 1971 was appointed Maryland State Chemist. He retired from that position in 1981. After retirement, he became a Master Gardener and spent much of his time gardening and doing woodworking projects. For several years, he served on the Boards of Directors of the Howard County Historical Society and St. John's Cemetery in Ellicott City. A lifelong Episcopalian, he was for many years a member of St. John's Church in Ellicott City. In addition, while living in Western Howard County, he served as Treasurer and a member of the vestry at St. Paul's Church in Mt. Airy, MD. His first wife, the former Alice Johanns, died in 1987. He is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, the former Theola Bear of Ellicott City, two children from his first marriage, David Clarke, Jr. of Columbia, MD and Jody Clarke of Arlington, VA, and four grandchildren - Timothy Clarke of Shenzhen, China, Benjamin Clarke of Washington, DC, and Matthew Farrell and Alice Farrell of Arlington, VA. Also surviving him are two sisters - Janie Clarke of Towson, MD and Betty Taylor of Florence, SC. Friends were received on Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 2 PM to 5 PM at Slack Funeral Home, 3871 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City. A memorial service was held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 9120 Frederick Road, Ellicott City on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. John's Church, or to the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Rd., Ellicott City, MD 21042. Mari Lynn Mulhall Zell Mari Lynn Mulhall Zell, 46, of St. Leonard, MD, passed away October 24, 2009. She was born in Alexandria, VA, to John P. Mulhall, Jr. (who preceded her in death) and Shirley Pafford Raum of Church Hill, TN. Her husband, Barry Zell, and sister, Susan Dawn Mulhall, preceded her in death. Her surviving children are Emory J.(16), Tyler A.(14), and April L. Zell (12) of St. Leonard, MD. She was a caring, loving and generous friend, mother, daughter, and sister to her siblings. Her brother, John P. Mulhall III, lives in Tracy's Landing, MD. Her stepfather is Ronald G. Raum of Church Hill, TN. Her stepsisters are Rachel Raum (Boca Raton, FL), Kathleen (Craig) Wess (New Windsor, MD), Rhonda Renehan (Westminster, MD). Aunts and uncles are Kathleen (Thomas) Steranko (Port Carbon, PA), Marvin Pafford, Jr. (Pensacola, FL), Vicki (Phil) Pendergrass (Chesapeake City, MD), Sandra Delaney (Levittown, PA), Peggy Lifford (Ft. Laramie, WY), and those in the Kingsport, TN, area are Jan (Allen) Lester; Donald, Johnny (Gilda), Ronald, and Ricky Pafford; and Theda (Robert) Jennings.
