ASSESSOR RESPONDS TO LETTER BY TOM GREANIAS
This is my response to the Guest opinion letter written by Tom Greanias:
"Assessor's office actions raise lots of red flags"
I understand Tom Greanias has a bone to pick--he lobbied to be contracted
as the Decatur Township Assessor after the former Assessor resigned.
However, a board of 5 people unanimously appointed me to fulfill the duties.
I have been diligent in the work that needs to be done and the changes that
needed to be made in order to get this work done. I understand Greanias
wanted the office to stay status quo, so when he comes in, the same people
can keep

TOWNSHIP ASSESSOR-ELECT WEIGHS IN ON DEBATE
Dear Editor:
Several recent Guest Opinion columns and Letters To The Editor in
several newspapers have touched on a dispute between the Decatur
Township Board of Trustees and the Township Assessors Office. In that I was
elected to the position of Township Assessor, although I do not take office
until January 1st, I have followed the situation with great interest. Whatever
the outcome is, it will affect my future administration.
On one side of the issue is the board which feels the laws need to be
changed to give them more control over

MANY REPUBLICANS MISSING BIG PICTURE ON CAP AND TRADE LEGISLATION
Dear Editor:
While many Republicans are predicting an increase in energy costs if we
pass the cap and trade legislation, they are missing the big picture. In fact,
the legislation will save exponentially more money than it will cost, as was
seen with the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments.
Predicted to cost $5.7 billion, the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments,
which used a cap and trade market system, turned out to cost just $1.6
billion to cut more than 4 million tons of sulfur dioxide. But savings in health
care costs were found to be as much as $70 billion dollars, according

SOME STATEMENTS IN TOWNSHIP BOARD LETTER WERE NOT TRUE
Dear Editor:
Many statements made in the letter to the editor "Township board
restricted from addressing grievances" were defamatory and untrue. Please
allow me to set the record straight on several of the issues raised.
Dee Mathews was appointed Assessor in February 2009, not January. I
did not appoint Dee Mathews to replace Bruce Owen--the Decatur Township
Board made the appointment. Every member of the board voted to approve
this appointment, including Hilda Walker.
Apparently Hilda has forgotten that she was part of that process.
Bruce Owen's resignation

TOWNSHIP BOARD RESTRICTED FROM ADDRESSING GRIEVANCES
Dear Editor:
The Decatur Township Board of Trustees has found themselves in an
untenable and inappropriate position of being restricted by the Illinois
Statutes from addressing grievances of Township employees concerning
actions of their immediate supervisor, Dee Matthews, an appointed township
assessor.
Dee Matthews was appointed by Vicki Sheets in January 2009, as a
replacement for Bruce Owen, the elected assessor who resigned under
pressure from the prior Town Board. Dee Matthews first action was to
appoint Vicki Sheets, the former appointed township
