9th Annual Rod Run revving up at Ramada Inn

The president of the Lakes Area Cruisers, a local organization of hot rod and classic car enthusiasts, Alvin Prewitt, said this week that he expects the turn out at this weekend's 9th Annual Rod Run & Classic Car Show to break all previous records.

According to Prewitt, the club usually receives around 50 requests for pre-registration. However, he said that this year the group had already received over 80 such requests.

Local volunteers stuff backpacks for school children


The volunteers posed for a photo after stuffing 200 backpacks with food on Friday. The storage bins contained the non-perishable food that went into the backpacks Photo by Jacque Hill.

Local volunteers spent their lunch break on Friday at the First United Methodist Church, stuffing 200 backpacks with non-perishable food which will be sent home with 200 Jasper school students.

The "BackPack Program" is a venture of The Southeast Texas Food Bank in Beaumont, and is organized locally by the Jasper Independent School District.

According to the Southeast Texas Food Bank, supplemental feeding programs help to threats posed to a child's capacity to learn and perform in school.
