A moderate earthquake rattled an area in east Texas near the Louisiana
border.
National Earthquake Information Center geophysicist Amy Vaughan says the
quake happened at 3:12 a.m. Thursday and had a magnitude of 4.3. It was
centered near Timpson, Texas.
Shelby County Sheriff's dispatcher Jacob Allen says the only injury reported
they've received is an elderly woman who fell out of her bed and cut her arm.
Allen says the quake caused broken windows and fallen dishes, but no major
damage has been reported.

Five Jasper residents have now been officially charged following a Monday night crack bust on the west side of town.
The suspects have been identified as Rochelle Melinda Larkin, 26; Kendall Larkin, 28; Malcolm Jahmal Parker, 19; Cheri Perrucci, 45; and Ronald Oneil Sells, 30.
According to Sheriff Mitchel Newman, it all started with a traffic stop at the intersection of Marvin Hancock Drive and West Houston Street, in front of Jasper Junior High School.
Newman said a county narcotics unit was working interdiction when they observed a vehicle run a stop sign.
A jury has decided a man should receive a 99 year sentence for beating his girlfriend's son so severely it caused injuries that will affect the child for the rest of his life.
The jury in Judge Layne Walker's court reached its decision at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The jury began deliberating Tuesday afternoon in the trial of 26-year-old Dewayne Byrd.
Byrd must serve at least 30 years before he's eligible for parole.
Earlier Tuesday the jury convicted Byrd of Injury to a Child.

Copper wire thefts have been a problem in southeast Texas for the last several years, and the problem also spills into southwest Louisiana.
On Thursday, Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft announced the arrest of four people there, who are accused of stealing electrical wire from Beauregard Electric in Leesville, and other electric companies in Rosepine, Cottonwood, and the Savage Forks area..
According to Sheriff Craft, the loss to Beauregard Electric Company alone was just under $19,000.00.

A Political Forum will be held for all candidates in Newton County. The event will be Friday evening at 7:00 in the Trout Creek Fire Department, and the organizers say that all candidates, along with the public, are invited to attend.
The Jasper Tour of Homes announced on Thursday their donation of funds to six local organizations.
According to organizers Heidi Meaux and Darlene Nolen of The Tour of Homes, funds have been donated to Downtown Merchants, East Texas Pregnancy Help Center, Jasper Master Gardeners,

Three new Jasper City Council members were sworn in, and began their leadership roles on Tuesday evening.

The council breezed through a short agenda, first selecting Councilman Raymond Hopson to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem, and then selecting District 1 Councilman Alton

If you were at the 66th Annual Jasper Lions Club Rodeo on Friday or Saturday evening, you may have seen television cameras in the arena. A crew from the new television program Young Country was videotaping the rodeo to be featured on their show in a few weeks.
Jeff Miller, the producer of Young Country, said that the Jasper rodeo, along with the performances of Lee Brice and Edens Edge, will air in mid to late June, or early July.
Miller said the footage will be aired again in April of 2013, a few weeks before the 67th Annual Jasper Lions Club

When the citizens of the Jasper area heard about 2-year-old Racer McCleods need for a very expensive Guardian Angel service dog earlier this year, they gave from their hearts, and the contributions totaled $4,766.00. That money, along with contributions from other organizations were handed over to Racers parents, Ryan and Tara McCleod during a February benefit in Nederland.
Racer was born with type-1 diabetes, and dramatic swings in his blood glucose level has resulted in several hospital stays, and at least one close call late last year.
