Miss America greets Soldiers, youth during one-day visit
Kindergarten and first-grade admirers greet Miss America Katie Stam at School Age Services on Monday. Stam visited with Soldiers at the Warrior Transition Unit and the Defense Information School before meeting with Child, Youth and School Services children.
There are two things to know about Miss America Katie Stam. For one, the 23-year-old almost always has a beaming smile on. The second, is, yes, you can get a photo with her. Fort Meade residents learned both points first hand this week when Stam visited the post Monday to meet with both Soldiers and children. The visit came after the Indiana native was invited by the USO to attend a ceremony celebrating the anniversary of the charity's efforts to greet returning service members at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. At around 1 p.m., she arrived at her...

'I had a great ride'

Retired Installation Command Sgt. Maj. Esmond Bakker speaks of his six years of service at Fort Meade and his 30-year Army career at his retirement breakfast Nov. 12 at Club Meade.
In the little more than a year that Installation Commander Col. Daniel L. Thomas has worked with former Installation Command Sgt. Maj. Esmond Bakker, he has given his colleague only one order -- and that was for Bakker to attend his retirement breakfast. "I made him a promise," the colonel told the audience of more than 100 garrison personnel, leaders from many of the post's tenant organizations and civilians at Bakker's retirement breakfast Nov. 12, "[that] this would be tasteful, short and succinct." Noting Bakker's reputation for humility, Thomas said what was important to Bakker...

Fort Meade celebrates veterans on, off post
Lewis Sorley, an author and military historian, delivers his speech at Fort Meade’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony Nov. 10 before an audience of veterans, service members, family members and distinguished guests.
An overcast sky and the plaintive sounds of a bagpipe set the scene as author Lewis Sorley recounted the stories of selfless veterans during the installation's annual Veterans Day ceremony.Sorley, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated author of "A Better War: The Unexamined Victories and Final Tragedy of America's Last Years in Vietnam," was the guest speaker for the event, held at the Fort Meade Museum Nov. 10. "He really believed what he was saying," said retired Sgt. 1st Class James Watson, a member of the American Legion Laurel Post 60. Watson said Sorley's retelling of the service of...

Countrymen lay a wreath for those lost
Two sailors with the German Embassy stand beside one of the wreaths placed before the gravestones of 33 German service members who are buried on Fort Meade.
Germany's flags waved gently in the breeze, mounted in front of the gravestones of fallen sailors. The scene Sunday was a typical one in Germany, as it was the National Day of Mourning, when Germans remember all those who fell in service to their homeland during two world wars or to tyranny. The location was atypical. The flags flew not on a distant European grave site, but at Fort Meade. Fort Meade's post cemetery is the resting ground for 33 German service members, primarily sailors, captured during World War II. During the war, those prisoners of war were held and died on area...

Jason Carter, of the Defense Information School Navy Detachment, and Corey Marquart, 14, round the last corner of the run course, pushing each other to the finish during Saturday’s Turkey Trot 5K race, sponsored by USAA.
Misting rain didn't douse the competitive spirit of runners trekking toward a chance to win a Thanksgiving turkey Saturday.Seventy-eight runners lined up at the Pavilion for the Fort Meade Turkey Trot 5K, sponsored by USAA. The participants took home a run T-shirt, and those with the top finishing times in each age group carried home a 15-pound Butter Ball turkey. "I was going to jog it, but I heard there was a turkey for the winner. I decided to run faster. It was motivation for me," said Myong Woo, the female first-place finisher in her age group. Luis Navarro, who has been the...
