Dressed in his dark, spic and span uniform, Superior resident and U.S. veteran Edward Garcia appeared at the event and was recognized for his service to his country. Smelter closed until November 22nd
ASARCO LLC shut down its Hayden copper smelter on Nov. 11 for maintenance. A press release from the company said that 72 operations employees would be on furlough, or leave without pay, during the shutdown. That represents leave for about 12 percent of the smelter’s employees. Maintenance staff will continue working. The smelter is being shutdown, “to replace key components and auxiliary equipment in the oxygen plants and in the wet gas handling system for the flash furnace,” according to Doug McAllister, ASARCO executive vice president.
