Alva Sanitation Departments semi hauling a dump trailer to
the Red Carpet Landfill wrecked early Monday morning near
Helena.
Trooper Goodson of the Major County Detachment received a call
of the accident at 6:50 a.m. Monday, November 23.
Trooper Goodson said Richard Leslie Rhoades was driving the
truck southbound when it ran off the road to the left and
tipped over ¼ time on the drivers side. Rhodes was pinned in
the cab of the truck for 45 minutes to one hour before being
freed by the Helena Fire Department. Rhodes was transported to
the hospital

Stimulus data assign funds to fake districts in Oklahoma
Millions in stimulus dollars are apparently flowing to
nonexistent congressional districts in Oklahoma because of
data entry problems with the federal governments Web site.

‘Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!’
These are words often heard around the country on Friday and
Saturday nights. The problem is that a large portion of
people saying these words are underage. In Alva 86.7% of
Eighth graders have stated that they had drunk alcohol at a
party, according to the 2008 Oklahoma Prevention Needs
Assessment.
This past Wednesday evening Kimberly Weast, M.F.A., and 28
college students, with the assistance of the Alva police
department, the county sheriff's department, and the
Northwest Center for Behavioral Health, put on a Reality

Northwestern to close for Thanksgiving break
Northwestern Oklahoma State Universitys campuses in Alva, Enid and Woodward will close for Thanksgiving break Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 25-27. No classes will be held during this time, and campus offices will be closed.
Offices will resume normal business hours on Monday, Nov. 30.

Teepees pitched in Avard park

Looking somewhat like a scene from the Old West, teepees and tents filled the Avard Camp Grounds. People in buckskin clothing cooked over a campfire.
A group of Oklahomas Mountain Men held their first Avard Rendezvous at the area, according to information supplied by Debbie Cunningham who helped arrange the meet.
In addition to camping, the group held a black powder shoot, hatchet and knife throwing contests.

Bullying prevention program begins at Alva Middle School
All schools deal with the issue of bullying. Alva Middle School is taking proactive steps to stop and prevent bullying by adopting the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. This research-based schoolwide systems-change program has been used successfully in schools all over the country and around the world with positive results.
