Bullying prevention program begins at Alva Middle School
All schools deal with the issue of bullying. Alva Middle School is taking proactive steps to stop and prevent bullying by adopting the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. This research-based schoolwide systems-change program has been used successfully in schools all over the country and around the world with positive results.
This program is not a curriculum that students participate in for only a few weeks. Rather, it is a coordinated effort by all the adults in the school to supervise and intervene when any bullying happens. As part of the program, students

Agreement reached with BIGMan, LLC.
After several years of inaction, the ownership of BIGMan, LLC and the Woods County Industrial Authority reached an agreement on repayment of a $100,000 loan.
During the past month, a meeting between the major stockholders of BIGMan and representatives of the WCIDA met to discuss a proposal by the electric car company. The two entities agreed that the car company would continue to pay their rent at the rate of $500 per month, a principal payment of $1,000 month beginning Jan. 5, 2010. The entire balance will be due Dec. 12, 2010.

Students participate in Western Honor Choir Tuesday

Students from Alva Middle School and Alva High School will travel to Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford Tuesday for the annual Western Honor Choir. The students were selected from several hundred applicants following auditions on October 10.
The students will participate in group clinics throughout the day for the concert to be held at the SWOSU Fine Arts Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

Outback Toy Run makes kids’ Christmas brighter

October 10 the first winter of the season blasted Woods, Alfalfa and Major Counties. Bikers in the area met in Aline for their annual Outback Toy Run despite the frigid temperatures and brisk winds.
Instead of the expected 300 bikers, only 35 or so braved the elements to participate. Still, they gathered a large group of toys to be distributed to Department of Human Services offices in all three counties. In addition to the toys, the group pitched in and purchased a boys and a girls bicycle and one tricycle for each county as well.

Jury trial set in acid-throwing case
Jason Michael Nelson was bound over for trial in Woods County District Court Monday, Nov. 16, on the charge of capital murder in the death of Nathan Lyon, Waynoka.
Lyon died following an altercation over text messages to a girl in January 2009.
The jury trial is set to begin July 12, 2010. Two weeks have been set aside for the trial with District Judge Dean Linder presiding.

After almost three decades, secretary resigns

Kathy Corr ended her 26 years as secretary for the Alfalfa County Commissioners by resigning at their Nov. 16 meeting. The resignation was read into the record by commission chairman Doug Murrow without any comments.
However, the commission had entered into executive session at each of its meetings on Nov. 9 and 16 to discuss some undisclosed issues with Corr.
The Commission had actually given Corr a raise at the Oct. 26 meeting.
