South Barber graduates recognize “the crazy ones” who change the world
|

With the class motto, If they can make penicillin out of
moldy bread, they can sure make something out of me, by
Muhammad Ali, the South Barber High School Class of 2012
surpassed a milestone, graduating their class of 14 Sunday
afternoon.
A superior vocalist all through high school, graduate Naicee
Gugelmeyer ended her career at South Barber singing a solo,
You'll Never Walk Alone, leaving few dry eyes among the
commencement crowd.
Class President Clarissa Murphy shared her trademark humor

Kiowa Council approves zoning change request for new business
At 7:30 a.m., last Wednesday, Kiowa's City Council held a
brief special meeting.
The council approved a zoning change at 303 N. Seventh Street,
Kiowa, Kan., from residential to commercial. This was at the
recommendation of Kiowa's Planning Commission. Passage of

Resignations and hiring at South Barber; Commissioner Harbaugh speaks

|
The crowd at South Barber's graduation gave a much-deserved standing ovation to Sr/Jr High Principal Fred Gillig who retires at the end of school year. That's after seniors Ali Thurman, Clarissa Murphy and Moira Kimmel showered him with praises for his long career at South Barber, 30 years of which was as ag teacher and FFA Advisor. At Monday night's meeting of the South Barber Board of
Education were several resignations and teacher hirings.
High School Principal Fred Gillig submitted his resignation,
which the board took their time accepting with regret. At
first no one would make a motion and the board laughed,
saying motion failed. Several board members said they were
sad to let Gillig leave. Finally all seven board members
approved his resignation unanimously.

Slowed down but didn’t stop
Just before midnight on April 13, Alfalfa County Sheriffs
Deputy Blake Trekell noticed a vehicle that failed to stop at
an intersection. Trekell was sitting stationary in the
northbound shoulder of Highway 64 just south of the junction

Dottie Gatz and Susan Holliday shared the art of making “Bierox” to those attending the Key Ingredients exhibit on Saturday, May 12, at the Waynoka Railroad Depot.

The Foods from our Heritage exhibit at the historic Waynoka
Railroad Depot building enjoyed over fifty participants during
the OHCE Day on Saturday, May 12.
Woods County Home and Community Education members Sally
Nighswonger, Susan Holliday, Lisa Higgins and Dottie Gatz were
on hand to demonstrate and discuss the foods from our heritage
and our region of the United States. Also the Aprons from our
Past exhibit and antique kitchen tools were displayed as a
special feature for the day.

Alfalfa County hit by IRS penalty number two

History to come alive at Santa Fe Depot

Sharon Kopriva will portray Anne Morrow Lindbergh at the Waynoka Chautauqua on Saturday afternoon, May 19, at the Waynoka Santa Fe Depot.

Waynoka's transportation history is coming to life at the
Santa Fe Depot where the Waynoka Historical Society will
present four characters from the past on Saturday, May 18,
at 1:30 p.m.
The performance, which is oral history presented in the form
of a Chautauqua, is part of the special programming in
connection with the Smithsonian exhibit, Key Ingredients, at
the Depot. Wayne Lamunyun, Sharon Kopriva, Susan Bradford
and Steve Nutter assume the roles from history.
