Broken pipe damages elementary school
A fire alarm at Delta Elementary School alerted firefighters and school maintenance staff to a broken waterline in the school Sunday afternoon. Firefighters arrived at the building just as maintenance personnel were arriving to conduct a welfare check on the building. A leaking pipe in the fire suppression system in the school caused the fire alarm to activate. Searching the building, crews found water in the office area and a broken pipe in principals Michelle Beito’s office. Water several inches of deep was standing in the office. The broken pipe sprayed water on ...

The Su-Valley Rams will be keeping their sticks on the ice and playing out their hockey season thanks to the generosity of Alaska’s Interior. Distraught over the recent theft of more than $2,500 in hockey gear from the Liewer-Olmstead Hockey Arena in Delta Junction, the Huskies wasted no time in organizing a fundraising skate-a-thon. News in the Interior travels fast, and others equally disturbed by the incident began sending in donations. Before the skaters even hit the ice, at least one local business had pledged $300 and the Fairbanks Arctic Lions hockey program ...

Karla Brown is a walking machine. After spending two and a half years walking across the United States, she is now embarking on a journey that will take her from Prudhoe Bay down to Argentina. It all started after a successful recovery from surgery. Growing up, Brown suffered from multiple epileptic seizures. The 21 pills a day she was taking did not control them, so she finally checked into a hospital in Washington State. Walking out the door, she never experienced another seizure. “And that began my journey,” Brown said. “I walked out that hospital door and kept ...

Huskies win inaugural game on new rink
Delta Huskies goalie Harold Probert warms his gloves over the fire pit behind the palyers’ bench during the inaugural game at the new outdoor rink. The temperature at game time was -6.
After years of work, the Huskies high school hockey team was ready to play the Su-Valley Rams last Friday in the first game on the new outdoor rink. The rink funds had been acquired, the plans made, the ground had been cleared, the foundation built, the boards put up, the lights installed, the ice made, the lines put down, the ice zammed, and finally the rink shoveled because it snowed several inches before the game. On game night, Delta hockey fans were in a festive mood as many watched the game from the warmth of their cars parked around the rink and others braved the six below zero ...
