Wounded soldier recalls deadly day at Fort Hood
Twelve feet.
Thats the distance that separated a local soldier from Nidal Malik Hasan, the
man who gunned down 13 people and wounded 30 more at Fort Hood Army
Base in Texas earlier this month.
Private First Class James Armstrong a 2001 Baldwin High graduate was
sitting in an Army waiting room when Hasan opened fire around 2:30 p.m. on
Nov. 4. Armstrong, shot twice during the rampage, can still close his eyes
and see the incident clearasday.
Everything that happened that day

Huge game at Braves Field this Friday night
One down. Four more to go?
Baldwin High blasted Northside-Columbus on Friday night, winning 40-7 in
round one of the GHSA Class AAA playoffs.
The slope, however, becomes much more slippery this Friday, as the
defending state champion Cairo Syrupmakers come to town. The
Syrupmakers were a 42-7 winner in their first-round matchup against
Woodland High. A large contingent of fans is expected to make the trip from
Cairo, which is located in extreme south Georgia and just north of
Tallahassee, Fl.
The Syrupmakers are extremely

Remembering the "old" Fifth Street
Fifth Street isnt exactly the nicest neighborhood in Baldwin County.
Many of the homes on Fifth Street are in disrepair, while many of its residents
live near the poverty line. Fifth Street took a tragic nosedive in the mid
1980s, a victim of the crack-cocaine epidemic that stole the innocence of
many American neighborhoods. In a sense, Fifth Street has never landed from
that nosedive and has never recovered.
Prior to the mid 80s, however, Fifth Street was a fairly charming, family-
oriented neighborhood. The

OPINION: Deep Roots Festival could use more variety, become more interactive
Saturdays Deep Roots Festival was another success.
Things were well-organized and orderly. The weather cooperated. Downtown
merchants saw a spike in sales. Everyone behaved themselves, for the most
part.
Organizing the Deep Roots Festival is a fairly large ordeal and a year-round
process. The festivals organizers should be commended and applauded.
Deep Roots shows off Milledgeville at its very best charming, diverse and
full of hospitality. Its difficult to find people who will criticize the Deep

New GMC prep facility should sparkle
By this time next year, students and faculty at Georgia Military College prep
should have a brand new home.
Construction is continuing at a brisk pace around GMCs new prep school
facility, which checks in at three stories and 75,000-plus square feet. School
officials hope to begin moving into the building by May, which would provide
ample time before the first day of school in August.
GMC officials offered a walking tour of the new facility to local media outlets
on Tuesday morning. Gen. Peter Boylan, seated in his familiar

Ol' Mercer receives nice package from Afghanistan
More than three dozen mementos hang from the walls of Mercers Barber
Shop near the courthouse.
Some are framed, while others hang by an old piece of Scotch tape. Included
is an autographed photo of George W. Bush, several Charlton Hestons and a
poster claiming that GUN CONTROL MEANS USING TWO HANDS. One item,
however, stands above the others in the heart and mind of Bobby Mercer.
The story begins one day earlier this month when Mercer walked inside his
house. On the kitchen table sat a UPS package. Mercer opened the

First female football coach leads Gators to perfect season
How often do you hear football coaches refer to their players as "my babies?"
"Ooh! Theyre double-teaming my baby!"
"My baby blew up that bootleg play!"
"My babies are playing some good football tonight!"
Well, youd probably have to ask members of the Gunby Enterprises Gators, a
team in the 7-8-year-old league at Walter B. Williams Jr. Park. The Gators are
coached by Evony Rhodes, who is the first female head football coach in the
parks history. This season, Rhodes has outcoached all of the men, leading
